ARCHIVED - 76-year-old woman rescued from drowning at Puntas de Calnegre beach in Lorca
The Copla Plan coastal safety campaign has been officially launched in Lorca this week
On the same day of the official start of Lorca’s summer coastal safety campaign, lifeguards working as part of the Copla Plan rescued a 76-year-old woman from the waves at Puntas de Calnegre on Monday July 4.
The Councillor for Emergencies of the Lorca City Council, Isabel Casalduero, explained that “at the time of the rescue, the green flag was waving, and the woman was swimming when the lifeguard noticed that she was beginning to show signs of fatigue and problems staying afloat.”
The rescue worker immediately jumped in the water and supported the swimmer, at which point a second lifeguard came to their aid, since the area is covered with loose stones and is difficult to manoeuvre.
The councillor confirmed that “once out of the water, the victim showed symptoms of exhaustion and low blood pressure, for which an 061 ambulance was dispatched to the area for a medical assessment.
She congratulated “the team of lifeguards of the Municipal Emergency Service for their important intervention” and underscored the fact that “it is essential for the safety of swimmers to always follow the instructions and advice of the lifeguards.”
Earlier this week, Lorca launched its annual surveillance and rescue system, officially known as the Copla Plan, to ensure the safety of bathers on the municipality’s beaches and the Coy river beach.
The Copla Plan involves several different elements: a First Aid station has been set up at Puntas de Calnegre beach and the Surveillance and Rescue team of lifeguards will monitor the waters with the help of an inflatable boat, a jet ski, a Quad-ATV and an amphibious chair for disabled beachgoers.
All this is in addition to the Basic Life Support Ambulance from the Murcian Health Service, as well as the 4x4 vehicle equipped with rescue equipment and forest fire fighting equipment that are in place in Lorca every summer.
