ARCHIVED - 457 new covid cases and 3 fatalities; another record number of cases for Murcia
These figures relate to Sunday 13th and were published on Monday 14th September
The Murcia Region broke the record for the most new covid contagions in a single day yet again, the Sunday figures published on Monday 14th September reporting 457 new positives, bringing the total number of ACTIVE cases diagnosed by PCR up to 6,249 and the total number of cases diagnosed since the pandemic first began 6 months ago to 13,815.
Of the 457 new cases, 110 correspond to the municipality of Murcia, 95 to Lorca, 47 to Jumilla, 38 to Totana, 24 to Cartagena, 14 to Alcantarilla, 8 to Águilas, 8 to San Javier, 8 to San Pedro del Pinatar, 7 to Fuente Álamo, 7 to Mazarrón, 7 to La Unión, 7 to Yecla, 6 to Alhama de Murcia, 6 to Archena, 6 to Cieza, 6 to Molina de Segura, 5 to Caravaca de la Cruz, 5 to Lorquí, 5 to Mula, and 5 to Puerto Lumbreras. The rest are distributed amongst the remaining municipalities, albeit in smaller quantities.
Murcia city, Lorca and Jumilla accounted for the largest number of cases during the last 24 hour period and Murcia City remains by far and away the municipality of the region with the highest number of cases diagnosed within the last 7 days (688), and Lorca follows with 448. Jumilla is next with 222 and these three municipalities are way ahead of the remaining 42 municipalities in the region in terms of actual numbers of cases.
However, when the data takes into account the size of the population in relation to the number of cases, the picture changes completely.
Jumilla is by far the municipality with the most cases per head of population in the region, with an average incidence rate (IA) of 867 cases per 100,000 of population during the last 7 days, the next municipality being Totana with 487 cases per 100,000. Lorquí is in third position with 476, followed by Lorca with 474, then Villanueva del Río Segura, a tiny municipality with only 2910 inhabitants but an IA rate of 412.
Murcia, which has the most cases in the region only has an IA rate of 151, due to the size of the population, which is 5 times that of Lorca, and is way down the list.
The main urban centre of Lorca city has today been put back into confinement with the same restrictions as are currently being applied in Jumilla for a period of one week in an attempt to control the virus.
Hospitalisations
In spite of the large number of new cases, the level of hospitalisations has remained stable, the number of patients reducing by two in the last 24 hours to 344. Of these, 60 are in intensive care. The remaining active cases are in home isolation, this total now being 5,905.
Fatalities:
There have been three further fatalities during the last 24 hours; two females of 85 and 90 and an 80 year old male. The total of fatalities is now 178, 18 of which have been recorded in September so far.
Recoveries:
During the last 24 hours, a total of 267 people were discharged from hospital or given the all-clear, bringing the total number of those diagnosed via PCR and now cured to 5,682.
