ARCHIVED - 337 Algerian migrants detained off the Costa Cálida already in 2020
Two more migrant boats were intercepted off Cabo de Palos on Tuesday
The steady flow of unauthorized Algerian migrants who have been detained along the coastline of Murcia while attempting to cross the Mediterranean into EU territory continued on Tuesday with the interception of two more small boats carrying 19 people, bringing the respective totals up to 25 and 337 since the turn of the year.
The latest “patera” boats were detected by the radars and high-powered cameras of the SIVE coastal vigilance service close to the headland of Cabo de Palos, and it is reported that one of the 19 people hoping to reach the Costa Cálida was under the age of 18. They were all taken to the port of Cartagena where Cruz Roja volunteers established that they were in good health before being handed over to the Policía Nacional, with the exception of the minor – he has been taken in by the Social Services department of the Region of Murcia.
The first of the three boats was intercepted at 7.40 in the morning just three miles from the shore, while the second was apprehended at around 10.00 eight miles from land.
In the meantime, the meteorological outlook is for a continuation of the settled weather and calm sea conditions which have contributed to the latest wave of migrants heading towards Murcia, at least for the next couple of days. By the weekend, however, cloud cover is likely to increase and there could be some rain on the way to the Costa Cálida.
