ARCHIVED - 3.4 hectares of land scarred by wildfire in Cieza
The recent dry spell has increased the risk of fires in many parts of the Costa Cálida
by It may be mid-October but with the current dry spell having lasted well over three weeks there is still a significant risk of wild fires in many areas of the Region of Murcia and various other parts of Spain, as was underlined on Wednesday when flames broke out in the countryside of Cieza and consumed an area of 3.4 hectares.
The alarm was raised at approximately 14.30 when staff at the lookout point in La Atalaya spotted the flames in the area of La Campana, close to the RM-714 road which runs between Venta del Olivo and Calasparra in the north of the Region of Murcia. However, firefighters on the ground and in the air managed to bring the situation under control in only a little over two hours, after which the helicopters deployed in the operation returned to their base and ground staff remained to extinguish the embers.
