ARCHIVED - 25,886 cases of coronavirus and 511 deaths across Spain since Friday
Despite the high number of deaths, the cumulative incidence has fallen to 374 per 100,000 inhabitants
The Ministry of Health has increased the overall total of coronavirus cases reported in Spain to date by 25,886 new cases across the weekend, and although this is still a significant figure, is the lowest number of positives for a weekend since October 5th.
Last weekend the figure was 38,273, which was itself a lower figure than the previous week.
The total number of coronavirus cases in Spain has now reached to 1,582,616 since the beginning of the pandemic.
This lower rate of new cases has pushed down the accumulated incidence rate which is calculated based on the total number of cases per 100,000 of population, so gives a more accurate indication of the percentage of the population affected by area rather than just using the number of cases; logically, cities have a larger population than a village, so the number of cases will be higher, whereas the percentage of cases per head of population is a level playing field.
For the last 14 days per 100,000 inhabitants the accumulated incidence rate (AI rate)stands at 374, compared to 419 on Friday and 470 last Monday, the total number of new positives reported in that 14 day period across Spain being 176,123.
Although this falling AI rate and fall in new cases registered is extremely positive and confirms that Spain is experiencing a de-celeration, case numbers are still extremely high and there is still considerable pressure on the hospital system even though there has been a fall in bed occupancy rates over the weekend.
Currently, there are 17,695 patients admitted for COVID-19 throughout Spain (17,963 on Friday) and 2,922 in the ICU (3,054 on Friday). In the last 24 hours, there have been 1,147 admissions (1,643 on Friday) and 812 discharges (2,099 on Friday). The occupancy rate of beds occupied by coronavirus patients stands at 14.26 percent (14.52% on Friday) and in ICUs at 29.98 percent (31.02% on Friday).
Unfortunately, the number of fatalities remains high: 512 since Friday, a figure that equals the highest figure recorded so far, which was over the weekend of November 9th.
43,131 people with a positive diagnostic test have died since the virus arrived in Spain, according to the data collected by the Ministry.
