ARCHIVED - 18km long continuous cycle lane for La Manga del Mar Menor
Existing cycle lanes will be linked up and new sections added
As residents of la Manga del Mar Menor know all too well, the Gran Via running the length of la Manga is the only carriageway currently available for those wishing to access any point of La Manga and can get extremely busy during the summer months.
There are cycle lanes in some sections, but the whole is disjointed and is not really very cycle-friendly.
As part of the ongoing “Sustainable and Integrated Urban Development Strategy, La Manga Abierta 365”, money has now been secured from Europe, to finance the construction of a continuous cycle lane in La Manga, which will be 18km long, running from km 0. in the Cartagena municipality, to km.18 in San Javier.
The cost of the project is 1.2 million euros, co-financed with 80% of the money coming from the EU regional development fund, the FEDER fund, and 20% from the Regional Government.
The cycling itinerary begins at the entrance of La Manga, at km. 0 in Cartagena and runs right along La Manga to km.18 of San Javier. The different sections of cycle lanes that already exist in La Manga will be connected by providing them with a homogeneous pavement and improving their layout for greater safety for cyclists. The route will be supported by the existing sidewalks and bike lanes to offer a continuous and safe network, which in a first section will run on both sides of the road and, from kilometer 4 onwards, will run along the right hand side.
The pavement of the lane will be made of a slurry material on the surface, which has non-slip properties and offers greater resistance to ultraviolet rays, weather changes and the traffic of low-weight vehicles such as bicycles.
