ARCHIVED - 1,200 jobs to be created by new Amazon logistics plant in Corvera
The plant will open alongside the airport in Corvera this autumn
Online retail is one of the few sectors of the global economy which can be said to have benefited from the coronavirus pandemic over the last 15 months or so, and in the Region of Murcia this is very visibly reflected in the new logistics centre belonging to Amazon alongside the airport in Corvera, which is expected to result in the creation of direct employment for 1,200 people over the next three years.
The expansion of Amazon’s base in Murcia is coinciding with the setting up of various new logistical plants in Spain and the rest of Europe, and the second facility in Corvera will occupy a floor area of approximately 160,000 square metres when it opens this autumn. The company’s projections are that once fully operational the facility will be processing 550,000 items per day.
According to Fred Pattje, the regional operations manager of Amazon in Spain, France and Italy, the Corvera plant will be a fully automated package distribution centre equipped with state-of-the-art Amazon Robotics technology, maximizing the safety as well as the efficiency of those employed there, and will be operational 24 hours a day with staff operating three 8-hour shifts.
In addition, the new facility boasts a high level of sustainability and carbon emissions will be reduced by the installation of solar panels on the entire roof area: these will provide enough electricity to supply the whole plant, and all lighting will be with low-consumption LED devices.
Mr Pattie was speaking during a visit on Wednesday from an assortment of local dignitaries including Fernando López Miras, the president of the Murcia regional government, and José Antonio Serrano, the Mayor of the city of Murcia.
