ARCHIVED - 12.5 million euros to protect major roads in Murcia against future flooding
The RM-19 motorway near San Javier is usually one of the first to close in episodes of heavy rain
José Ramón Díez de Revenga, the minister for Infrastructures and Development in the regional government of Murcia, presented his Department’s budget for 2020 on Monday and highlighted an investment of 12.5 million euros in protecting roads belonging to the regional network from flooding in times of heavy rain.
The two “gota fría” storms of last autumn and the passage of Storm Gloria over Mediterranean coastal areas of Spain in January underline that extreme weather events appear to be becoming more frequent in the Costa Cálida, and in recent years the temporary closure of major roads has been a common factor in the various episodes of torrential rain to hit the Region of Murcia. One of those which almost always suffers problems is the RM-19 motorway next to the Himoinsa plant a few kilometres inland from San Javier, causing severe disruption to traffic between the city of Murcia and the coast of the Mar Menor.
The overall budget of the Infrastructures and Development department in the government has been increased this year by 30 per cent to 226.3 million euros, much of which will be devoted to flood protection measures in the Campo de Cartagena and on the coast of the Mar Menor: the municipalities to benefit most will therefore be those of Torre Pacheco, San Javier, Los Alcázares, San Pedro del Pinatar and Cartagena, where some 40 roads are maintained by the regional government, and this prioritization of the area will last for three years.
Another 47 million euros have been set aside for maintenance and repairs on the RM-1 motorway which in theory ought to run from San Javier to Santomera, but in fact ends abruptly in an orange grove some 11 kilometres short of its intended junction with the A-30 motorway. In the meantime, there is no news regarding when this road might at last be completed.
