ARCHIVED - 110,000 fines for failing to obey pandemic restrictions in Murcia since last March
Over half of the offences concern failures to wear facemasks in public
When the national state of emergency which was declared in response to the Covid-19 pandemic came to an end on Saturday night the number of fines issued in Murcia to those failing to abide by the restrictions imposed over the last 14 months rose to 110,376, representing a rate of one for every 13.5 people living in the Region.
After the declaration of the first state of emergency on 14th March 2020 the responsibility for the fines lay until mid-June with the central government delegation, and in that period 37,400 offences were reported. After 16th July the regional authorities took over, and since then the Murcia ministry for Health reports that almost 39,000 of the 73,000 offences dealt with have been related to people failing to wear facemasks, a misdemeanour which carries with it a penalty of 100 euros.
Another 10,059 people have been found guilty of failing to abide by the night-time curfew, while 4,462 have been guilty of exceeding the numbers of people permitted at social gatherings and 1,329 have organized or taken part in unauthorized private parties.
