ARCHIVED - 1,000 trees planted in Corvera forestry initiative
The Town Hall of Murcia plans to plant 100,000 trees by 2030
One of the measures adopted by the Town Hall of Murcia to mitigate the effects of the climate crisis in the municipality is an “Estrategia Foresta” forestation program in which the intention is to double the number of trees growing within Murcia to 200,000 by the year 2030, and among the areas where planting is already under way in the small town of Corvera, close to the new Region of Murcia International Airport.
A workforce consisting of members of the Morus Alba association, pupils at the local Isabel Bellvis primary school and volunteers from Totana has planted over 1,000 new trees on the land next to the local electricity station, all of them belonging to species which are genetically resistant to the harsh climate of the Region of Murcia. These are supplied by a nursery in Abanilla called Muzale, which is the only one to work with endemic seeds from species which have been collected in the Region.
Apart from creating shade and reducing the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere, the new wooded area will also provide a leisure zone for the residents of Corvera, one of the outlying districts which will be home to 80 per cent of the new trees envisaged in the Estrategia Foresta 2030 scheme.
Half of the new trees are to be planted along the course of the River Segura, another 20 per cent in parks and gardens, 10 per cent in rural land, 10 per cent along greenways and the remainder in other outlying districts scattered throughout the 882 square kilometres of the municipality.
