ARCHIVED - Granada village classes Three Kings as essential public service to circumvent covid rules
The plan is for their Royal Majesties to deliver presents door to door unencumbered by covid!
All over Spain the issue of how it will be possible to hold traditional Christmas and New Year celebrations during the pandemic is preoccupying governments and members of the public alike, and in one town in the province of Granada steps have already been taken to ensure that at least the Three Kings will be able to deliver their gifts to youngsters on 5th and 6th January in spite of the fact that Cabalgatas, or parades, have been cancelled all over the country already due to the size of the crowds they normally draw.
The Town Hall of Cúllar Vega (population 7,300) has categorized the visit of the Kings as an “essential public service”, exempting it from any restrictions on movement which might be in place, and although they will not be taking part in the traditional street parade on the afternoon of 5th January Melchior, Gaspar and Balthasar will be making personal calls to the homes of the youngest members of the community. Families can apply to be included in their rounds from 4th December until 2nd January, with personal protection equipment and a Covid-free delivery service guaranteed!
It is perhaps a measure of how quickly people have adapted to life in the pandemic that the Town Hall reports a very enthusiastic response even before the application period begins, and if the Kings were harbouring any hopes of taking a year off due to coronavirus it seems that they will be disappointed!
